The thymus gives rise to two T cell lineages, and , thoughtto develop independently of one another. Hence double positive(DP) thymocytes expressing CD4 and CD8 co-receptors are usuallyviewed simply as progenitors of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. Insteadwe report that DP cells regulate the differentiation of earlythymocyte progenitors and cells, by a mechanism dependent onthe transcription factor RORt, and the lymphotoxin (LT) receptor(LTR). This provokes a revised view of the thymus, in whichlymphoid tissue induction-type processes coordinate the developmentaland functional integration of the two T cell lineages.
