Supplemental Table 1. Data reported by Cannell (1982) and collected by KJN from the primary literature (see Supplementary Materials pdf version of extended data matrix for primary citations and additional information not used in statistical analyses, e.g., plant height and reproductive biomass). Column headings are as follows (left to right): rows (symbols used to visually identify different taxa on bivariate plots), taxon (a = angiosperm, g = conifer), D (basal stem diameter for woody species or average stem diameter for herbaceous species, in metres), L (leaf biomass, kg dry wgt. per plant), S (stem biomass, kg dry wgt. per plant), R (root biomass, kg dry wgt. per plant), shoot (stem and leaf biomass, kg dry wgt. per plant; note some authors did not report stem and leaf biomass separately), log shoot etc. (log10-transformed versions of preceding columns), column 12 (calculator used to sort data into size-classes for separate regression analyses; current setting specifies --3less than or equal to sign log R less than or equal to sign -0.5).

Supplemental Table 2. Data collected by KJN from the primary literature (1990 and 2001). All units either in g dry wgt. per plant or cm (these units were converted into kg dry wgt. per plant and metres, respectively, for subsequent analyses; see JMP Supplementary Materials). Column contents as follows (left to right): year of publication, code used to identify volumn:issue:article, stem biomass, leaf biomass, shoot biomass (note some authors did not report stem and leaf biomass separately), root biomass, total (plant) biomass (sum of shoot and root biomass), reproductive biomass, root:shoot ratio, plant height, growth time ('age' of plant), taxon (genus and species, or family), page of article (Table or Figure) data were reported, and full citation (title, authors, journal, volume, number, date of publication, pagination).
