To estimate energy needs the Physical Activity Index (PAI) was calculated for the women and men in our study. The PAI is total energy expenditure divided by basal metabolic rate (S1, S2). The median PAI for the women in our study was, 1.9 and for the men, 1.8. The PAI value for the women was 30% greater than FAO/WHO recommend (PAI = 1.6 (4)) but the value for men was identical to that recommended (PAI = 1.8). Furthermore, PAI's measured using doubly labeled water and indirect calorimetry for women (S3) with dual working roles in Gambia equaled, 1.9. It thus seems likely that women with dual working roles have substantially greater energy needs than FAO/WHO standards suggest.
