| Supplemental Table 1. Relations between species richness, human population density and net primary productivity (NPP) across 1957 1° grid squares of sub-Saharan Africa, for 10 functional groups. Trophic levels: 1 = herbivore; 2 = carnivore. Results for regressions between species richness and NPP are given separately for NPP and NPP2 terms, except those with very low explanatory power (r2 < 0.005); in all cases, species richness peaks at intermediate or high NPP values, with the former given in the final column.
