KeyPEPFAR focus countries are shown in boldDis = disbursed Comm = committed $US throughout Slicing the PieThis table looks at the 33 countries that have the most HIV-infected people and combines all committed and disbursed funds since 1989 from the World Bank, PEPFAR, the Global Fund and the Gates Foundation. See more details on how the table was compiled, below.
Table detailsData came from their websites and communications with each funder. Note that China, Russia, India and Indonesia have large populations and relatively low HIV prevalences, which means that their prevention and treatment needs differ markedly from those of the other countries. With PEPFAR, committed and disbursed funds are considered the same. Domestic spending is from 2006, unless otherwise noted. Adult prevalence data and number of infected people come from UNAIDS 2006 and 2007 updates, except for Ethiopia, which did not report that information in those documents. (Estimates for Ethiopia come from its 2008 UNGASS Country Progress report.) World Bank figures do not include projects to regions and are limited to IDA credits and grants. Most data were collected in February 2008. Population figures come from the CIA Fact Book.
