Note: Corrections were made as follows: In the last paragraph on the first page, the temperature value for the south pole at 1 mbar was changed to 15 K warmer than at the equator, and the observed pole-to-pole contrast was also changed to 15 K. In the equation, a minus sign was added before w. The value of w as a result of the calculation was changed to -0.01 cm s-1. The originally posted SOM is available here.
