Pattern Separation in the Dentate Gyrus and CA3 of the Hippocampus
Jill K. Leutgeb,Stefan Leutgeb,May-Britt Moser,Edvard I. Moser*
Theoretical models have long pointed to the dentate gyrus asa possible source of neuronal pattern separation. In agreementwith predictions from these models, we show that minimal changesin the shape of the environment in which rats are exploringcan substantially alter correlated activity patterns among place-modulatedgranule cells in the dentate gyrus. When the environments aremade more different, new cell populations are recruited in CA3but not in the dentate gyrus. These results imply a dual mechanismfor pattern separation in which signals from the entorhinalcortex can be decorrelated both by changes in coincidence patternsin the dentate gyrus and by recruitment of nonoverlapping cellassemblies in CA3.
