The impact cratering process on a comet is controversial butholds the key for interpreting observations of the Deep Impactcollision with comet 9P/Tempel 1. Mid-infrared data from theCooled Mid-Infrared Camera and Spectrometer (COMICS) of theSubaru Telescope indicate that the large-scale dust plume ejectedby the impact contained a large mass (106 kilograms) of dustand formed two wings approximately ±45° from thesymmetric center, both consistent with gravity as the primarycontrol on the impact and its immediate aftermath. The dustdistribution in the inner part of the plume, however, is inconsistentwith a pure gravity control and implies that evaporation andexpansion of volatiles accelerated dust.
