Preeclampsia is a relatively common pregnancy disorder thatoriginates in the placenta and causes variable maternal andfetal problems. In the worst cases, it may threaten the survivalof both mother and baby. We summarize recent work on the causesof preeclampsia, which reveals a new mode of maternal immunerecognition of the fetus, relevant to the condition. The circulatingfactors derived from the placenta, which contributes to theclinical syndrome, are now better understood. This brief reviewon preeclampsia does not cover all aspects of this intriguingcondition but focuses on some new and interesting findings.
