Endometriosis is a disease defined by the presence of endometrialtissue outside of the uterus. Severe pelvic pain is often associatedwith endometriosis, and this pain can be diminished with therapiesthat suppress estrogen production. Many women with endometriosisalso suffer from other chronic pain conditions. Recent studiessuggest that mechanisms underlying these pains and sensitivityto estrogen involve the growth into the ectopic endometrialtissue of a nerve supply, which could have a varied and widespreadinfluence on the activity of neurons throughout the centralnervous system.
