Postnatal Refinement of Peripheral Olfactory Projections

Axonal projections from the olfactory epithelium to the olfactorybulb are organized into glomeruli according to the expressedodorant receptor. Using gene-targeted mice, we show that glomerularmaturation proceeds along different time courses for two similarreceptors and requires sensory input during distinct sensitiveperiods. During early development, some glomeruli are innervatedby axons of neurons that do not express the same receptor. Theseheterogeneous glomeruli normally disappear with age, but theypersist in adults deprived of sensory input by unilateral andpermanent naris closure. Persistence may be due, in part, toprolonged survival of olfactory sensory neurons.
