Bacterial Invasion: The Paradigms of Enteroinvasive Pathogens
Pascale Cossart1* and
Philippe J. Sansonetti2*
Invasive bacteria actively induce their own uptake by phagocytosisin normally nonphagocytic cells and then either establish aprotected niche within which they survive and replicate, ordisseminate from cell to cell by means of an actin-based motilityprocess. The mechanisms underlying bacterial entry, phagosomematuration, and dissemination reveal common strategies as wellas unique tactics evolved by individual species to establishinfection.
