The prefrontal cortex (PFC) subserves cognitive control: theability to coordinate thoughts or actions in relation with internalgoals. Its functional architecture, however, remains poorlyunderstood. Using brain imaging in humans, we showed that thelateral PFC is organized as a cascade of executive processesfrom premotor to anterior PFC regions that control behavioraccording to stimuli, the present perceptual context, and thetemporal episode in which stimuli occur, respectively. The resultssupport an unified modular model of cognitive control that describesthe overall functional organization of the human lateral PFCand has basic methodological and theoretical implications.
