Two electrons in two weakly coupled orbitals give rise to twostates (diradical) with electrons residing in separate orbitalsand two states (zwitterionic) with both electrons paired inone orbital or the other. This two-electron, two-orbital statemanifold has eluded experimental confirmation because the zwitterionicstates have been difficult to locate. Two-photon excitationof fluorescence from Mo2CI4(PMe3)4 (D2d) has been measured withlinearly and circularly polarized light. From the polarizationratio and the energy of the observed transition, the 21A1 (**)excited state has been located and characterized. In conjunctionwith the one-photon allowed 1B2 (*) excited state, the zwitterionicstate manifold for the quadruply bonded metal-metal class ofcompounds is thus established.
