Preliminary observations have been made from a ship of the warping of the geoid across the Puerto Rico Trench. Astrogeodetic and grevimetric measurements of the deflections of vertical and the corresponding levelsurface profiles are compared for this site. The accuracies at which levelsurface topography would provide a useful datum at sea are mentioned with reference to oceanographic requirements. ments.
