Thiamine: A Novel Conversion from Thiochrome

Reaction of thiochrome with with agr-chloropropionic acid yields thiamine and acetaldehyde. The reaction seems to proceed by way of a zwitterion intermediate that undergoes decarboxylation and hydrolysis. The biological significance of the reaction cannot yet be evaluated.
