Floral Induction and the Stimulation of Cell Division in Xanthium

The mitotic index in the apical region of the stem of Xanthium seedlings doubled within the 24 hours immediately following a single inductive dark period and an increase occurred within 16 hours in one case. The significance of this finding in relation to the onset of reproductive development is discussed.
