Come Edit the Next Wave US Site

Are you interested in helping scientists develop their careers within and without academia? Do you want to generate content for a top-notch Web site? If so, then consider becoming US editor for Science's Next Wave! As US editor, your responsibilities (detailed below) will chiefly involve writing and editing US-based columns and features. But you'll also have the opportunity to participate with other members of Next Wave's dynamic global team of editors, writers, and business development professionals in a variety of editorial, promotional, and outreach activities for the site.

To fill this position, which is based at Next Wave's Washington, DC offices in the AAAS Headquarters building, you will need a background in science, ideally beyond the PhD level; familiarity with the career development issues facing America's young scientists; and excellent written and verbal communication skills. You will also need to be an accomplished and experienced editor, and you should possess exceptional organizational and time management skills, as well as the facility to work to multiple deadlines. Computer and Internet literacy will also be required if you are to succeed in this challenging and rewarding position.

Editorial -

  • Set priorities for, establish, and maintain the US editorial calendar

  • Edit and top edit articles generated for the CDC and the PDN

  • Recruit and edit both freelance and volunteer writers and columnists

  • Write articles for the site

  • Work with the other members of the Next Wave's editorial team on monthly careers features

  • Assist with site production

  • Assist the Next Wave's global team in establishing and achieving the larger editorial goals of the site

Promotion and Outreach -

  • Represent Next Wave at local and national meetings

  • Maintain and monitor Next Wave forums

  • Participate in the organization of outreach events for Next Wave

Requirements -

  • Strong interest in the career development of scientists

  • Extensive scientific background; PhD with some postdoctoral experience strongly preferred

  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Previous writing and editing experience

  • Ability to work effectively with scientists and administrators at all levels
