Keith Smith

Keith Smith joined Science in 2015 as an associate editor, responsible for research papers in astronomy, planetary science and related fields. He was previously an assistant editor of the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society based in London. Keith obtained his PhD from the University of Nottingham, where he conducted research on the structure and molecular content of the interstellar medium. He then held a research fellowship at the same institution. An observational astronomer by training, he has observed on some of the world’s largest telescopes. Keith has held visiting positions at the Southern African Large Telescope in Cape Town and the European Southern Observatory in Santiago. He has also worked to popularise astronomy, appearing in the media, conducting outreach activities, and formerly serving as the deputy press officer of the Royal Astronomical Society.
