How to Access Science

Detailed information on access to the full range of Science Web sites and services can be found in our global site help and in our subscriptions area. Here, we offer a brief summary of our access policies for content from Science Magazine. (Note: The following applies only to content on the magazine section of the site. Other sections such as ScienceNOW Daily News, Science Signaling, and SAGE KE, are covered by different subscription arrangements; see our subscription access chart for details.)

ACCESS LEVELS

You can access the site in one of four states: As an unregistered guest user, a registered user, an individual subscriber, or a user at a site-licensed institution.

  • As a guest user, you'll have free access to the table of contents for current and previous issues of Science, to summaries and abstracts of Science articles published since October 1995 (including current Science Express articles), to selected free sections such as Essays on Science and Society and Technical Comments, to supporting online material related to research papers, and to the product information in the Science Products section. You'll also be able to search the site.
  • Becoming a registered user gives you access to all features and functions open to guest users -- plus full-text access to all Science research papers published after 1996 and more than one year ago, to our suite of content-rich e-mail alerts, and to selected other content, such as Science editorials and articles of particular interest that we periodically offer for free to registered users.
  • Individual subscriptions (available through membership in AAAS) opens up the full suite of content and services in the magazine section of the site, including the full text of all Science articles published since 1880 (including Science Express), and premium services such as My Folders, Saved Searches, and Download to PowerPoint.
  • The access rights of users at site-licensed institutions will depend on the subscription plan selected by the institution. In most cases, institutional subscriptions will include access to all articles that appear in the print Science. Institutions may also, for a separate fee, add Science Express access to their subscription plans. Users at site-licensed institutions may take advantage of premium services such as My Folders, Saved Searches, and Download to PowerPoint, but they must register with the site to do so.

CHECKING YOUR ACCESS RIGHTS

Access Rights link example

You can get a quick reading on the access rights you currently have available by clicking the "Access Rights" link on the account toolbar in the upper right-hand corner of the page, directly beneath the search box.

Remember, if you are an individual AAAS member who's accessing the site at a site-licensed institution, you may still need to log in with your individual member username and password to get access to the full suite of benefits to which your membership entitles you.
